Interviews | Meeting the artists of the "Entanglement" group show!

EVI ZAMPELI.

1.Could you tell us more about the works you are currently presenting at Depo Darm Gallery? What exactly will the visitors experience when they see your works in the group show “Entanglement”?
Ιn this group exhibition I present mainly paintings with oils on canvas and a three-dimensional construction from recyclable materials, such as paper, fabrics and beads. Most of the works are landscapes in which I have combined existing elements that I have found and have aroused my interest, such as landscapes, building architecture and archaeological finds with elements of my imagination. I would like the viewer to feel mainly a sense of joy and to be able to travel looking at my works. In general, I like the viewer to be free to create his own world according to his own perception and his own experiences.

2.How do you feel about the entanglement-involvement of your own works with the works of two more artists in the exhibition “Entanglement”?
These are artists who at first sight have a different work, but with a better look, someone can see quite a few commonalities between the works that exhibited in this exhibition. I feel that we have a meeting of three different artists who mainly approach the landscape, each with his own perception and his own way.

3.What were your most intense thoughts during the lockdown? How did quarantine affect your creativity?
One of my most intense thoughts was when all this situation would end. When it comes to creativity, I think a lot of artists have been helped by quarantine and incarceration to produce work. Unfortunately, I was on the opposite side cause it didn't help me that much. I can say that I was more disoriented than inspired by the whole situation of the lockdown.

4.What is it like to create art during the lockdown? How exactly can this situation inspire you?
It was difficult for me !!! At first I can say that I was excited by the idea of being able to spend days and hours in the laboratory and creating calmly, but as the days went by all this state of confinement boomeranged on me and I stopped painting. Recently ,I realised that this may have happened because as an artist I draw inspiration mainly from travel, from the outside environment and from the people I meet.

5.Did the situation cause you any concern for search and creation?
To this day, I cannot say that I have been particularly concerned about the creation of some works related to it, but only a more general concern for humanity and society. Of course, you never know what might happen next.

6.One issue that is debated at the moment is whether the Internet can bring art closer and bypass social distancing. What is your opinion?
The internet has been here for years in our lives, but we just saw it completely differently at the moment because it was our only way out during quarantine and we discovered new possibilities of it. I do not think that at the moment it has the power to replace the direct contact of the viewer with the work of art and the spaces of art and in general the physical contact and communication between people.

7.What are your plans for the next period?
My plans are to enter to my new studio and work, after I got inspiration from my walks after
the lockdown.

ANTONIS KAPNISIS.

1.Could you tell us more about the works you are currently presenting at Depo Darm Gallery? What exactly will the visitors experience when they see your works in the group show “Entanglement”?
In this exhibition I participate with five images, which are made in black acrylic paint on a wooden surface. Little white paint has been used to prepare the surface and, in some places, in powder form. Two of the works are entitled Eclipse I and Eclipse II. I got the idea for these images from the three hours of darkness that covered the earth, at the time when Christ was on the cross, as mentioned in the Gospel of Matthew. I intended to construct a boundary state, characteristic of the apocalyptic nature of the work of art. Of course, the above is my wish. The alignment of the sun and the moon and the hidden presence of one of the two planets is imaginary; all that really exists is the surface of the work. The only alignment that takes place is between the work and the observer and the only hidden side, what remains a mystery, is the interpretation of the work by the observer. A mystery game, which can be done in the other three images.

2.How do you feel about the entanglement-involvement of your own works with the works of two more artists in the exhibition “Entanglement”?
The whole exhibition consists of landscapes; I like to see them as landscapes of the same space, seen through different mental states.

3.What were your most intense thoughts during the lockdown?
There were two issues that came to the fore with the emergence of the virus and the evolution of the whole situation into lockdown, health and the economy. In turn, I was faced with both; as for the former, I had to protect myself and those close to me, while financially there was great insecurity.

4.How did quarantine affect your creativity?
It only bothered me practically, as, due to the lockdown, I could not go to my studio.

5.What is it like to create art during the lockdown?
The time-consuming process of producing the project presupposes, in my case, a kind of isolation anyway. This is something that has preoccupied me a lot, but in the form of a voluntary restriction and not an external imposition.

6.How exactly can this situation inspire you?
Maybe with more free time and reviewing some data ..

7.Did the situation cause you any concern for search and creation?
My main concern, I think, in this condition has more to do with livelihood issues.

8.One issue that is debated at the moment is whether the Internet can bring art closer and bypass social distancing. What is your opinion?
Yes, there are forms of art that do not lose their "aura" through the internet. As for the painting, however, it needs the physical presence of the spectator, because through this encounter, the spectator will discover the time and the movements that contribute to the ritual of the creation of the work. This encounter is a physical experience based on he proximity. This in my opinion is completely lost when a project is played as an image on a computer screen.

9.What are your plans for the next period?
Under the current circumstances, planning the future is rather precarious. Currently a lot of work in the laboratory .

SU WONG.

1.Could you tell us more about the works you are currently presenting at Depo Darm Gallery? What exactly will the visitors experience when they see your works in the group show “Entanglement”?
The works which collected by me and the gallery are all my most recent work. They represent a very special transition period of my creation process, from playing with vivid color, shape and multi layout to enlarge the details and texture. So the if the visitors have seen my previous works, they will definitely see the differences. The visitors will come closer to my work because most of my work are in much smaller scale comparing with two other artists.

2.How do you feel about the entanglement-involvement of your own works with the works of two more artists in the exhibition “Entanglement”?
I am very happy with the result. We are three painters and we use different media and different painting techniques, but we entangled the show will lively vitality. And also we have something in common underneath the surface, something about nature, about imaginative sensation, about poetic atmosphere.

3.What were your most intense thoughts during the lockdown? How did quarantine affect your creativity?
Obviously we didn't gather together with friends to the opening, because of the lockdown, the number of visitor are limited. But for me personality, I found myself surprisingly fulfilled during this time, I could only focus on creating without any consideration about what is happening outside, because the time has stopped, like a blank page on the diary, the only thing we do is considering who we are and the emergency of satisfying ourselves with creation, a closing space only for creation, it is very important for a creator, but because of the society sometimes we don't have the chance to escape, by lockdown is the chance.

4.What is it like to create art during the lockdown? How exactly can this situation inspire you?
I have my own lovely studio space at home but separate from where I live, I redecorated my studio with more equipments, as I didn't work here before the lockdown, I used to think I like to work with other artists but during these time I found myself prefer more working alone. I stayed in my studio all day, reading, working sometimes enjoy the sun, I listen to the city's voice, less noise, more sound from the wind and whispering from my neighbours. I enjoy the quietness, I could work immersed. to be honest I am still in a lockdown mood until now.

5.Did the situation cause you any concern for search and creation?
Yes, I could not travel as I plan to go to Florence to study ancient painting techniques, and also I couldn't go to museums. and all my concert tickets are cancelled these are the cons.

6.One issue that is debated at the moment is whether the Internet can bring art closer and bypass social distancing. What is your opinion?
Internet does help a lot, and we are living in a internet area, but I say in neutrality for internet, it brings art closer but also further. Art create a sensation for people, people should see the real art, but not from the internet.

7.What are your plans for the next period?
Keep on creating.
